Description

Following on from our successful introduction of the Gynae Emergency Simulation (GEMS) Course into the SWOT Training programme in 2015, we are planning to run another GEMS course on 11th November 2016.

It will be held in the Simulation centre as previously and will cover the assessment, recognition and management of the sick Gynae surgical patient. The day will hopefully provide trainees with improved skills and confidence to manage such patients, and we will have a mixed faculty of consultant Gynae surgeons and Anaesthetists to deliver the training.

The course will be designed with similar principles to the CCrISP course (an established component of general surgical training). During the day we will deliver lectures, workshops and simulation scenarios on the following topics:

Sepsis
Haemorrhage
Confusion
Shock
Bowel obstruction and ileus
Acute renal failure, fluid management and electrolyte disturbance
ABG interpretation
ECG rhythm recognition

Many junior trainees have to manage complex gynaecological patients in the post-operative period or in emergency situations with limited senior input and with limited experience of managing sick surgical patients, so we feel that this course will be a valuable addition to the training programme, whilst also addressing modules in the RCOG core curriculum. We aim to have approximately 20 trainees (ST1-ST7).

Course fees £60 per delegate for full use of all facilities in the Bristol Medical Simulation Centre and lunch/refreshments. (This fee has been subsidised by sponsors)
